Credit card companies use all manner of incentives in the effort to get your business. There are airline miles, reward point systems; even cash back credit cards which are available. Using a credit card does entail paying interest and sometimes annual fees, but some of these cards come with many perks above and beyond simply being useful to make purchases when you do not have cash on hand. Cash back credit cards are one of the most popular types out there, since everyone likes getting money back when they make purchases using their credit card.
Cash back credit cards vary widely in the terms and conditions which apply but all work essentially the same. Every time a purchase is made using your card, a certain amount of cash is earned; after a given period of time, the cardholder receives this money back. Cardholders can opt to receive this in the form of a check or apply this amount towards the outstanding balance on their card. Either way, there is a benefit for the cardholder.
How these cash rewards are accumulated differs with each credit card company, but almost all credit card companies offer some sort of reward for all purchases made. Purchases made at specific participating locations may be eligible for double or triple the usual reward amount. These locations include grocery stores and gas stations. Bonus rewards are typically given for the first purchase made using the card – and the cardholder is eligible for these rewards even on large purchases.
Different credit card companies will award these monetary awards at different times. Most wait until the cardholder has accumulated a certain amount of rewards; $50 is a common amount, but other companies allow cardholders to request a check be sent whenever they want it. Annual and bi-annual payments are also common, as is merely applying the cash rewards directly to the balance on the card.
No credit card is perfect, even a cash back credit card. There will be a monthly finance charge if you do not pay off your entire balance, with the majority also charging an annual or even monthly fee. There may also be processing fees assessed when a disbursement of cash rewards are made. The usual fees for credit cards also apply here – late fees, over the limit fees and balance transfer fees. Another word of warning – with many cash back credit cards, making a late payment can void your cash rewards.
A cash back credit card can be a great thing, with the cash back being a great perk to using ones credit card. There are downsides, but these cash back credit cards offer more ups than downs overall. With all of their benefits, these are a great bargain for most consumers.
