Get a Government Grant: Who, What, How

'font-style:italic;' class='uawbyline'>by Keith Ronson

There are many different ways, reasons, and people who can get a government grant. Be aware, however, that there is a qualification process. Not everyone is entitled to grant funds from the government, and they are never given out as a form of personal financial assistance.

Defining the Government Grant

The federal government is the authority that awards grant money. Grants are a form of financial assistance, usually for a business or non-profit agency. Applicants must fill out a form that proves they meet the criteria for the grant money. The funds must be used for something other than a service or property that would benefit the government. Currently available in a wide array of categories, there are over one thousand grants the federal government offers to U.S. citizens.

Can You Apply to Get a Government Grant?

You can apply to receive federal government funding if you own a small business, a non-profit agency, or head up a government, education, or public housing organization.

For individuals, the grant application must be made on their own behalf. An individual cannot apply for an organization or business. The grant application requires that the individual meets all necessary criteria. Right now, grants are available from such agencies as the EPA, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Arts & Humanities, and Victims of Crime.

Federal Grants for a Small Business

Owners of a small business who are also female, part of a minority, an armed forces veteran, or considered disabled are eligible to get a government grant from the U.S. government.

A second type of grant is offered to further business development in areas that have been hit by a natural disaster, tribal communities, rural areas, and those places considered largely low-income.

Another type of grant applies to non-profit groups with a goal of aiding small business. The grant money will not be released to an individual owner of the business, but will go to the non-profit organization itself.

Some small companies might also be eligible is they have a need to hire and train qualified employees. If your small business develops new products, there could also be a grant opportunity available to you.

Applying for a Government Grant

Each type of grant comes with different requirements. These are usually very specific. There is a lot of paperwork involved, and it can take a long time to complete it correctly. In fact, the application packets are so long and involved that there is a tutorial you can take before starting the process. You will need to have a budget worked out for the funds and include an estimation of the length of your program. If the dates you enter are invalid, the application will automatically be rejected by the funding agency. There are limitations on the number and types of characters you include in each field of the application form.

Then the waiting begins. There are numerous applicants who are all vying for the same funds. You can opt to receive updates on the status of your grant application, but it is not a quick process.

If you have been wondering how to get a government grant, you might have thought the process might be easy or fast. Neither is true. You may find yourself in need of help to find an appropriate grant, or to submit the application. Rest assured that there are trustworthy companies who can aid you in getting the grant money you deserve.
