April 14, 2004 — Lapis Solutions today extended its range of RAID data storage products with the introduction of the DataPacTM 7000 Series, which supports up to four terabytes of data using sixteen 250GB drives, to meet the needs of the growing market for less expensive, entry-level and mid-range RAID solutions for network storage. Featuring a SATA, SCSI or 2Gbit Fibre interface on the drive side and a SCSI or Fibre 2Gbit interface on the host side, the 7000 Series is available in either a 12 drive 2U or a 16 drive 3U version.
There are two things certain in this world, death and taxes. After reading this article about data storage you may discover another certainty: It doesn’t hurt to be well-informed about things you never really considered interesting before.
Each provides powerful performance with the Fibre Channel RAID solution offering RAID 5 sustained reads of over 380 megabytes per second (MBps) and sustained writes of 280MBps, while the Fibre-to-SATA product supports sustained RAID 5 reads of over 250MBps and160MBps writes. The custom-designed ASIC supports up to 1GB/second bandwidth or 2GB/s for redundant controller designs. For ease of installation, operation and maintenance, modular, hot-swappable active components are incorporated to minimise the possibility of downtime. The use of dual host channels on the 3U model further minimises the risks of downtime.
In addition, three cooling fan modules guard the product from overheating and two power supply units ensure steady operation of the system. Each controller supports up to 1GB cache memory. It also features a 64-bit Risc processor with both level one and 256KB of level two internal cache, an Ethernet LAN port and two RS232 ports for out-of-band management and uninterruptible power supply support. Within the firmware, safety features include intelligent drive handling, auto cache flush and auto shutdown to protect subsystem data. “For OEM customers, one of the added attractions of the 7000 Series is that it is available either bearing Lapis’s own DataPac brand identity and documentation or it can be adapted to reflect their own specific branding requirements.” said Tony Howard, managing director of Lapis Solutions. “The introduction of the 7000 Series enables organisations to obtain all their RAID hardware from a single source and to have an integrated family of compatible devices.” About Lapis Solutions Lapis Solutions is a UK based company with a strong international outlook that specialises in the design and manufacturer of high-performance and cost-effective RAID solutions for markets worldwide.
